The 2011 Gathering
The Gathering was created in 1987 on the campus of Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas. The event is the oldest of its kind in Texas and second oldest in the United States.
The Gathering exists to promote, preserve and practice an important part of the oral tradition of the American West. In addition to classical, traditional and contemporary cowboy poetry, the event includes presentations of cowboy music and story telling.
All sessions are held on the campus of Sul Ross State University on a Friday and Saturday in late February or early March. Daytime sessions are free. A stage performance is held each night and a nominal admission is charged.
The Gathering is funded primarily by donations which go to reimburse the participants and is administered by a volunteer committee.
